Heh, yay for alliteration.
Owwie, I really don’t think I’ve done good on my finals. I really don’t. These classes have no been anyway in the same zipcode as fun.
One teacher really never gave me much in the way of feedback, so I never knew what I was doing right or wrong. I’m not even sure if she actually even looked at my homework. I turned in incomplete assignments and still got 100% on them.
Then, for my other class, I had to write a paper on a fictional business and create a whole model for improving it over the next 12 to 24 months. I may be a lot of things, but I’m not business minded. ^^;;
At any rate, this semester may be my off one. So long as I do good in my Spring classes, I think I’ll be okay.
The site is back up and everythings transferred over. I canceled my account with the other webhost and still haven’t gotten back to them about why. (Not all that interested, to tell you the truth.)
The forums… wow. What to say? It took Jasson and I two days to install the subcategories modification; it was that involved. Several thousand lines of code that had to be added to that damned script. I think that’s the hardest thing we’ve ever attempted, I really do. But it was sooo worth it. ^__^ It definately looks better than the default stuff phpBB comes with. I think I’m actually starting to get excited about forums again!
But…. after Arise/RL, I’m not all that interested in leaving things to the rules. I don’t want to scream at people all the time. I just want them to act like civilized human beings and not a gaggle of preschoolers I have to watch every second. In lieu of this, I’m to put security measures into the actual script so they can’t pull some of the bull-plucky they did there.
The signature plugin is a must. I think one picture, maximum size of 468 x 234; 5 lines of text, 255-355 characters, no wild bbcodes, limited HTML, total sig no larger than 25kb. Who knows, it might force people to be creative.
I’m also thinking about installing a “money” system. It always annoyed me when a serious Web design topic got buried under a sea of ads for people’s blogs, message boards, and sites. The RPGs were also annoying, since that was damned near a full-time job.
Basically, Gaia Online has a “money” system. For each post, reply, vote, etc. you make, you earn a little “money.” The amount varies depending on how long you’ve been on. You can then use this “money” to buy little pixel items for your avatar. I’m not thinking of anything quite that heavy, though. What I’m thinking is posting rights, subtle guidance to post in certain forums, and a quiet moderation.
For example:
Each post in the Shameless Advertising forums would cost a certain amount. If they’d rather spend their money elsewhere, they’re not going to be as likely to spam the heck out of those forums with a million ads.
Each new RPG would have a cost to set up and then require “rent” to remain open each month. That way, they might also be encouraged to wrap up the game.
Of course, I’d probably have to offer cool things they could spend their money on instead. Probably extra smilies, avatars, etc. *ponders* It’s an idea, but there’s a lot of stuff to think about there. Gawd, I feel like I did back when I first started. This is a weird feeling! Good… but weird. ^_^

One Response to “Finals, Forums, and Failing”

Heh, I never realized you’d made brand new forums. If I did, I might have chosen to migrate the worthy part of the Bent Lounge community I’d wanted to keep and just let the rest die. XD
Oh yeah, those hacks are just awesome. I’ve been having a grand time with all those hacks, too, on Firestorm’s board. BTW, for the particular hack you’ve put in, there’s going to be a brand new version of it coming out pretty soon for phpBB 2.0.20/21 (author says he’s waiting for .21 to release, given that .20 has a lot of security issues). I’m waiting for that new version, actually, given that it’s going to come with a souped up and improved user profile control panel (plus, the admin can get to the user profile through the board rather than the admin CP). You can get his pre-installed packs here. They’ll save you and Jasson a lot of coding time when it comes to the upgrades. ^^
I was thinking about joining the Lunaescence forums, but given that I don’t think I’d be too appreciated with some of the members there, I’ll refrain. But best of luck to you and Jasson with the new forums. Let me know how things go. Maybe we could just team up sometime and figure out problems with SQL and PHP scripting as we run across them. ;)
